AI Agent Security: 5 Risks You Are Probably Ignoring

AI agents have access to production systems, customer data, and cloud infrastructure. A compromised agent is not a chatbot saying something embarrassing — it is a security breach with real consequences.

Yet most teams deploy agents with the same security posture as a prototype. Here are five risks you are probably ignoring.

1. Prompt Injection

An attacker crafts input that makes your agent ignore its instructions and execute malicious commands. Your code review agent could be tricked into approving a backdoor. Your email agent could be manipulated into forwarding sensitive data.

2. Credential Exposure

Agents need API keys for LLM providers, databases, and external services. Where are those keys stored? If they are in environment variables or config files, one compromised agent exposes everything. Keys should be encrypted at rest (AES-256) with per-tenant derivation.

3. Data Leakage via LLM Calls

Every prompt sent to an LLM provider leaves your infrastructure. If your agent includes customer PII in prompts, that data is now on someone else's servers. DLP policies should redact sensitive patterns before they reach the LLM.

4. Uncontrolled Agent Access

Does every agent need access to every tool? A documentation agent does not need database write access. A QA agent does not need deployment permissions. Apply least-privilege: each agent gets only the tools and permissions it needs.

5. No Kill-Switch

When an agent goes rogue — and eventually one will — can you stop it instantly? A kill-switch that propagates in seconds is not optional. It is insurance you hope to never use but cannot afford to lack.
